Celebrant: Most Reverend Martin W. Currie

Diocese of Grand Fall
1856 - 2006
The annual Chrism Mass, ideally held on Holy Thursday, is concelebrated in the cathedral by the bishop and priests of the diocese in communion with the people. It is meant to publicly express the unity of the diocese, the unity of the priests and their bishop, and to celebrate the institution of the priesthood and priestly service. The blessing of oils and consecrating of Chrism for all of the diocese takes place at this Mass.
The bishop celebrates the Mass of Chrism. During the Mass he consecrates the chrism and blesses the other oils. This Mass is, therefore, one of the chief expressions of the fullness of the bishop's priesthood and is looked upon as a symbol of the close bond between the bishop and his priests.
The bishop consecrates CHRISM to be used to anoint the newly baptized, those to be confirmed and those who are to be ordained.
The OIL OF CATECHUMENS is used to prepare and dispose catechumens for baptism., while the OIL OF THE SICK is used to strengthen the sick in their infirmities.

Homily by Bishop Currie
SINCE OUR DIOCESE WAS FOUNDED 150 YEARS AGO, THE PRIESTS HAVE GATHERED WITH THEIR BISHOP AND THE FAITHFUL FOR THE BLESSING AND CONSECRATION OF THE HOLY OILS. EACH YEAR THE SCRIPTURE FROM LUKE’S GOSPEL IS READ AND WE HEAR THE WORDS, "THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE HAD ANOINTED ME TO BRING GOOD NEWS TO THE POOR." AS HE ROLLED UP THE SCROLL HE SAID, "TODAY THESE WORDS ARE FULFILLED EVEN AS YOU LISTEN."
Welcome to the historic parish of St. Patrick’s, Carbonear. My name is Gerard Butt, and on behalf of Monsignor Edward Bromley and the Parish, I want to offer a special welcome to all who have gathered here today for this special liturgy. The Mass of Chrism is always a very important celebration in the life of our Diocese, but perhaps especially this year as we celebrate our 150th anniversary.
