BUSINESS ARISING
Parish Council Elections were held on February 16 & 17, 2008. Dave White, & Bernard Fitzpatrick were re-elected and Anastasia Furey was elected. Paul Baldwin was also in the running. Since Paul will no longer be on council and he wasn't present, Bernard will call him and thank him for his time on council. Bernard congratulated Anastasia and welcome her back to our Parish Council.
Mike Rogers has received an estimate from Newfound Roofing for the cost of repairs to the church. For Elastomaric Coating for the roof, sealing of windows, removal, sealing and replacing siding and repairing eaves the estimate was $146, 900.00. Mike stated that the roof is the most important repair necessary and should be done first. He is waiting to hear from two other companies on estimates for the concrete repair.
Bernard reported that Bingo started on Monday, February 18 and was held again on February 25 and will continue on Monday evenings. So far it looks as if they will make a profit of possibly $300 - $400 per week. He stated that they need more help. Anastasia will call some people and try to get some more helpers.
Mike reported that the church bathrooms have been repaired. He borrowed an electric snake and unclogged the sewer line.
NEW BUSINESS
Mike submitted the year end Interfaith Cemetery financial report.
Mike reported that St. Patrick's Cemetery is in very poor condition. There has been some trees breaking off due to the winter weather and this is a concern as to who is responsible for repairs to headstones if a tree happens to fall and damage one. Bernard will speak to Bill Finn and find out. Mike also reported that the plows used to remove snow for funerals, have done a lot of damage to the ground. Large pieces of sod have been torn up as well as topsoil has been moved. After some discussion on who is responsible for this damage, it was decided that a Bernard will write a letter to the local funeral homes to make them aware of the situation and try to come to a solution. Bernard also talked about the possibility of a summer grant to hire some people to do cemetery maintenance this summer. He will look into it.
Monsignor Bromley pointed out that this is the last meeting for this council and that the next meeting will be the first for the new council. The last election of officers was held after last year' s election and the officers will remain in place for one more year.
Monsignor asked for a Parish Council member to attend a round table discussion at Bethany United Church to be held by the Seniors Resource Centre and the Baccalieu Trail Seniors Resource Committee on March 4, 2008. Anastasia agreed to represent the parish at this meeting.
Dave White presented a cheque for $1000.00 to the parish from St. Vincent de Paul Society for heating cost associated with the parish centre, since they use the building as their headquarters. Rose Mooney will write a thank you note to the society.
